Sait Faik Abasıyanık holds an important place in Turkish short story literature. The characters he creates in his stories, their perspectives on the world, and the connections they form with life also reflect the author’s unique personality. Upon examining Abasıyanık’s stories, it becomes evident that the action of “walking” is frequently used, and that this action has multiple psychological connotations for the story’s characters. Through their walks along city streets, the protagonists both observe the outside world and confront their inner worlds. The impact and significance of this action on the characters’ lives become particularly evident in Alemdağ’da Var Bir Yılan, one of the author’s most recent short story collections. Walks accompanied by imaginary friends reveal the psychological defense mechanisms an individual develops in the face of loneliness. In addition, walks associated with conditions such as febrile illnesses, sleepwalking and psychological distress reflect the individual’s existential crises and vulnerability in the face of modern life. Walking in Alemdağ’da Var Bir Yılan serves as a multilayered narrative element that expresses the individual’s loneliness, quest for freedom, and struggle for existence. In this study, the short story collection Alemdağ’da Var Bir Yılan -one of Sait Faik Abasıyanık’s later works- is examined through the lens of the concept of walking. The aim of this study is to reveal the significance of walking in the author’s life and the functions it serves in the stories. While analyzing the texts, the study will address not only psychoanalytic literary theory but also philosophy’s perspective on the concept of walking.
