Historical texts written on the translation and interpretation of the Qur'an provide invaluable sources for tracking the stages of development of the Turkish language. Numerous academic studies have been conducted on translations and commentaries written during the Old Anatolian Turkish period, which represents the first phase of the Western Turkish dialect, and research in this field continues to this day. Among these works, Tercüme-i Tefsîr-i Ebû’l-Leys es-Semerkandî stands out as one that provides important data in terms of linguistic features and vocabulary. This work holds a significant place in understanding the Turkish language of the period and its linguistic evolution, thanks to its both linguistic and conceptual richness.
This study examines the 1679 manuscript of Tercüme-i Tefsîr-i Ebû’l-Leys es-Semerkandî, which is considered an important source in terms of the grammar, historical development, vocabulary, and expressive power of the Turkish language. The work begins with Surah Yâsin and ends with Surah Nâs. Comprising 200 folios, this Qur'an commentary has been identified as a manuscript from the Ottoman Turkish period based on the ketebe (scribe's) inscription. Each page contains 29 lines, and the text is written in a combination of both vocalized and unvocalized nesih script. The work reflects the linguistic characteristics of 16th-century Turkish. This article provides information about the content and characteristics of the work, along with examples of the language features of the period. The aim of this study is to introduce the 1679 manuscript of Tercüme-i Tefsîr-i Ebû’l-Leys es-Semerkandî to the academic community and present findings from linguistic, historical, and grammatical analyses.
