Abstract

Kartlis Tskhovreba’ya Göre Harizmşah-Gürcü İlişkileri

The This study examines the relations between the Khwarazmians and Georgians in the South Caucasus during the 13th century, based on the anonymous Georgian chronicle Kartlis Tskhovreba. This work, an anonymous Georgian chronicle, was edited by Roin Metreveli and Stephan Jones, translated into English by Dmitri Gamq’relidze, and published in Tbilisi in 2014 by the Georgian Academy of Sciences and Artanuji publications.

Our study utilizes “The Hundred Years’ Chronicle” section of the chronicle, which provides important information about the Mongols, who ruled the South Caucasus in the 12th and 14th centuries, as well as Georgian-Mongol and Georgian-Khwarazmian relations. Jalal ad-Din Mingburnu, the leader of the Khwarazmian Empire-which was destroyed as a result of the Mongol invasion-turned to the Caucasus to establish a new power center and was attracted by Georgia’s strategic location and wealth.

Jalal ad-Din tried to form an alliance with the Georgian Queen Rusudan, but these attempts ended in failure, and military clashes broke out between the two powers. Following the heavy defeat of the Georgian army at the Battle of Garni, Jalal ad-Din captured the Georgian capital Tbilisi and established a short-lived rule. However, the Georgian nobles and people resisted Khwarazmian rule, and Tbilisi was recaptured for a time. The death of Jalal ad-Din and the Mongol invasion eventually ended Khwarazmian rule in Georgia.

This study aims to make an original contribution to the field by focusing on Kartlis Tskhovreba as a source, which has been underutilized in previous research, while examining Khwarazmian-Georgian relations.
