Abstract

Lugat-ı Mütekâribe ve Müteşâbihe ve Müterâdife’deki Farsça Atasözlerine Türkçe Karşılıklar

The relationship between Persian and Turkish dates back to the Old Turkish period. As a result of this relationship, many words were exchanged between the two languages. As a result of this exchange, many words were transferred to Turkish from Persian, and Persian also became a source for Arabic words to be transferred to Turkish. This exchange between Persian and Turkish is also seen in linguistic structures such as proverbs. This study deals with some proverbs that can reveal the aforementioned relationship between Persian and Turkish proverbs. The Persian proverbs used in this study are taken from the section entitled “ba‘z-ı ?urub-ı emsal ve ta‘birat-ı farsiyye” in the treatise Lugat-ı Mütekaribe ve Müteşabihe ve Müteradife. Registered in the Ali Emiri Collection of the Millet Library with the inventory number 197, the work, whose author is unknown, consists of 10 leaves. There are 86 proverbs in this section. In this study, the Persian proverbs recorded in the work were transcribed in Latin letters and identified from various Persian sources. Afterwards, the proverbs are translated into Turkish. The Turkish proverbs that express the situation expressed by a Persian proverb are also identified and shown along with their sources. While 28 of the 86 proverbs used in this study could not be identified in Turkish, it is understood that the remaining 58 are used in Turkish in the same or different forms.
