Abstract

Friedrich Dieterici’nin İki Dilli Türkçe Öğretim Kitabı

Turks migrating from east to west brought about many political, social, and cultural changes in Europe. With the Turks becoming the dominant power, Turkish spread rapidly, especially in Eastern Europe. As a result of this situation, people living in these lands started to write various works to get to know Turks, learn Turkish and carry out missionary activities. These works, which were generally prepared bilingually, also have trilingual and quadrilingual versions. In these works, it is possible to find information about the grammar rules of Turkish, dictionaries, speech texts on different subjects, Turkish proverbs, Nasreddin Hodja jokes, poems by different poets, prayer texts, and samples of official correspondence. The subject of this study is the work named “Chrestomathie Ottomane Precedee de Tableaux Grammaticaux et Suivie d'un Glossaire Turc-Français” (Ottoman Turkish Texts Beginning with Grammar Tables and Continuing with a Turkish-French Dictionary) written by Friedrich Dieterici and published by Chez George Reimer in Berlin in 1854. The book consists of seven sections: “Preface, Grammar, Texts, Translation, Dictionary, Appendices, and Corrections”. In this study, only the grammar section of the book will be analyzed since it will exceed the size of the article. In this section, different uses and changes of vowels, different uses and changes of consonants, different uses of pronouns, how verbs are conjugated according to tenses and modals, differences related to numbers, and words in which palatal n is used will be given.
