Abstract

Kurmacanın Tarihe Bakan Yönü: Aşk ve İsyan

In the traditional understanding of historical novels, the main purpose of the author is to adhere to historical reality. However, postmodern historical novelists do not undertake such an effort. They prefer to make insinuations that will shake the reader’s perception of reality and remind them that what they read is a text. Postmodern historical novelists benefit from the gaps of history and fill these gaps using their imagination. History serves as a material to enrich the fiction of their works for them. People who are ignored in official historiography can become main heroes in postmodern novels. Nedim Gürsel (1951- …) is among the postmodern historical novelists in Turkish literature. In our study, it was revealed with the data obtained that Nedim Gürsel’s novel Aşk ve Isyan (2020) could be included in the postmodern historical novel genre. In his novel, Gursel parodies Voltaire’s work Candide . It was determined that the author reconstructed the end of Voltaire’s Candide in Ask ve Isyan in accordance with his own imagination. It was revealed in the data obtained that he created his work by fusing history and fiction starting from the Tulip Age and the Patrona Halil Rebellion. In addition to including historical figures such as Ahmed III, Damat (Groom) İbrahim Pasha, Murat IV, it’s also seen that he has included fiction heroes to a large extent. It was determined that Gürsel constructed Ask ve Isyan by using metafiction, intertextuality and parody expression techniques.
