Abstract

Öt- (Geçmek) Fiili Üzerine Çok Anlamlılık İncelemesi: Eski ve Orta Türkçe Dönemi – Kuzeybatı (Kıpçak) Grubu Türk Lehçeleri

The meaning of a word is the object or thing that the concept it represents is visualized in our minds. These meanings can change in the course of the word in the history of language, or they can remain the same. These meaning changes in words can be caused by phonological, morphological, semantic or cultural reasons. A word sometimes completely moves away from its basic meaning and sometimes acquires new meanings in relation to the basic meaning. The verb öt- is one of the words that draws attention in this respect. In our opinion, the use of the word in different meanings in the Old and Middle Turkish period has led to the need to question its status in contemporary dialects. Northwestern (Kipchak) group Turkish dialects have been preferred by us to make an evaluation, since they include the highest number of dialects among contemporary Turkish dialects. According to the results of the research, the verb “öt-” has been used with different meanings besides the basic meaning of “to pass” in Old and Middle Turkish period and Northwest (Kipchak) group Turkish dialects. As a result of the examinations made in line with the principles of semantics, it is possible to say that the word has a very meaningful structure by gaining a connotation. In addition, it is seen that it is important to reveal the polysemous structure of the verb’s aktionsart.
