Nicknames are the names given to the person by the society depending on the behavior, attitude and appearance of the person in social life.Nicknames, which are a special type of personal onology in the field of onomastics, are ascription names that reflect the characteristics of the cultural life in which they live and are given based on observation.When giving a nickname, the actions, physical characteristics, adfiliation and spiritual aspects of the person are taken into account. For this reason, there are many social, cultural, historical and psychological factors in giving nicknames. Therefore, the compilation and interpretation of nicknames also affects fields such as history, psychology, sociology and folklore and linguistics. Giving nickname is a deep-rooted tradition in Turkish society. Positive or negative behaviors of the person, physical characteristics, profession, lineage, briefly everything is evaluated.Most of the time, it is given to the person without announcing. Today, even if the usage of nicknames has decreased in large settlements, in small cities, districts , villages and towns; it continues to be used in places where kinship relations and acquaintance are high. Hasanbeyli , district of Osmaniye province, is one of the places where the tradition of giving nicknames continues.In this study, the nicknames compiled in the Hasanbeyli , district of Osmaniye province, in the years 2020-2021 were tried to be classified in accordance with the onomastic features with the descriptive research method.One hundred and sixty-one nicknames obtained in the research were grouped according to their meaning, origin and structure of the words, and the reasons for giving nicknames were explained based on the information given by the sources.While the reason for giving nicknames were being explained, the structures and the origins of the words were also given.
