Abstract

Türkçe-Rumca Manzum Sözlükler Dizisi III: Manzume-i Vehbî

From past to present, one of the important factors determining the relationship between states has been the economy. In this context, the first contact between the Turks and the Greeks took place due to economic reasons. The security of the historical Silk Road and the desire to dominate it are accepted as the reason for the contact between the Göktürks and the Byzantines. From that day until today, the relationship between Turks and Greeks has continued increasingly. As a natural result of living together in the Ottoman period, these two nations have both influenced and been influenced by each other. Owing to this coexistence and interaction, many written and unwritten cultural materials have been revealed. One of these cultural materials is the verse dictionaries, which were prepared for the purpose of learning the language of the other and teaching their own language. During the Ottoman period, Turkish-Greek verse dictionaries were written both in Anatolia and in the areas outside Anatolia where Ottoman domination was established. The number of Greek-Turkish verse dictionaries that have been discovered until today is five. Copies of these are available in various libraries as manuscripts or prints. These are Tuhfe-i Rûmî, Tuhfetü’l-Uşşâk, Manzûme-i Vehbi, Lügat-ı Nûriye and Hâfız İbrahim Lügati. In this study, we discussed a Turkish-Greek verse dictionary named Manzume-i Vehbî, which was written by Vehbî Zarî Hanyavî. With this study, the copies in the libraries have been determined of Manzume-i Vehbî, on which no scientific study has been conducted before, then the dictionary has been examined, and the text has been published Thus, another important study belonging to the Ottoman period, when multilingualism was experienced, was placed at the service of today’s researchers.
