Abstract

Hubeyş et-Tiflisî’nin Kâmilü’t-Ta‘bîr’i ve Türkçe Tercümeleri

Kamil al-Tabir is a Persian work on dream interpretations of Hubaysh al-Tbilisi, one of the 12th century scholars. It was dedicated to Kilic Arslan II, the sultan of Anatolian Seljuk State. It is the most famous work of Hubaysh al-Tbilisi, who has around thirty works in various fields such as religion, language, literature, medicine, pharmacology, astronomy, astrology and dream interpretation. Kamil al-Tabir was translated into Turkish for the first time during the region of Aydinoglu Isa Beg (1360-1390). Later it was also translated during the regions of Mehmed I (1413-1421), Murad II (1421-1451), Shehinshah (1461-1511), the prince of Bayezid II, and Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566) of the Ottoman sultans. The translation, which is known to have been dedicated to Yavuz Sultan Selim (1512-1520), was in fact dedicated to Shehinshah b. Bayezid (1461-1511). There are nine different Turkish translations of Kamil al-Tabir. Eight of them are belonging to Oghuz Turkic and one of them belonging is Chagatay Turkic. Six of these translations have more than one copy. Eleven copies of the translation commissioned by Beylerbeyi Karaca Bey during the reign of Murad II and nine copies of the translation for Suleiman the Magnificent were identified. Two abridged versions have been prepared from the Turkish translation dedicated to Suleiman the Magnificent and the Persian original of Kamil al-Tabir. Kamil al-Tabir is an alphabetical encyclopedia of dream interpretations. In the work, each letter formed a chapter in order according to the Arabic alphabet, and the head words of each chapter were arranged alphabetically. In most of the Turkish translations, this order had been preserved and Turkish equivalents had been added next to the head words. In the translation commissioned by Beylerbeyi Karaca Bey during the reign of Murad II (1421-1451) and the translation dedicated to Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566), the head words are in Turkish.
