Abstract

Türkmen Türkçesi Gramerleri Temelinde Modal Sözlerin Sözcük Türleri İçerisindeki Konumu Üzerine Öneriler

Modality is the expression of the speaker’s subjective opinion and attitude regarding the proposition or the situation described by the proposition. Modality, which shows the speaker’s cognitive, sensory or volitional point of view regarding a situation or the content of the sentence, are indicators that indicate the speaker’s attitude towards communication. Modality is considered as a semantic category and it can be marked variously by morphological, lexical, syntactic, prosodic means or by combination of different categories. Modal words, which are among the modal markers, show the speaker’s perspective on propositions and facts. They are auxiliary words that add an additional nuance of meaning to the meaning of a word, word group or sentence. In Turkish literature, modal words are classified into quite a variety of semantic categories with different definitions and explanations. At the same time, it is also controversial whether modal words constitute a separate word category or, if not a word category in itself, in which word type they should be considered. This is also valid for Turkmen Turkish. In Turkmen Turkish grammars, different approaches can be detected in the handling and evaluation of modal words. In particular, issues such as defining the structure and type of modal words, determining their functions and classifying them are among the controversial issues of Turkmen Turkish grammar. There are various approaches in Turkmen Turkish grammar that evaluate modal words as an independent word category, handle them within existing word categories, or label them as enclitics at a completely different grammatical level. In this study, how the concept of modal words is defined in Turkmen Turkish grammars, how it is classified, with what criteria, and with what lexical types it is evaluated, will be examined and suggestions will be made as to which category modal words should be included. In order to shed light on the subject, the introduction of the study will briefly focus on the concepts of mood, modality and modal word. In order to reveal the general trend in Turkish literature, approaches on the subject in other modern Turkish dialects will be mentioned. The main purpose of the study is to determine the place of modal words, which indicate a heterogeneous group in Turkmen Turkish in particular and typologically Turkish in general, within grammatical categories. Here, in order to determine the place of modal words in the lexical category, we will try to reach a conclusion by comparing them with other types (preposition, conjunction, interjection, enclitic), especially under the auxiliary/functional word category, and a new perspective will be proposed to the discussions on the subject.
