Abstract

Osmanlı Dönemi Seramik Şamdanlarının Gelişimi

Ceramic artifacts are among the fundamental indicators reflecting societies' lifestyles, aesthetic understandings, and technical capabilities. Accordingly, ceramic candlesticks produced during the Ottoman period are objects that stand out not only for their functional qualities but also for their artistic value. The study analyzed the formal characteristics, production techniques, and decorative elements of ceramic candlesticks, supported by visual materials. The study focused solely on ceramic candlesticks suitable for table or floor use; hand-made candlesticks were excluded. To better understand examples from the Ottoman period, some ceramic candlesticks from the Seljuk period were also evaluated within their historical context. Furthermore, the concept of "tile" is considered an extension of ceramic art and integrated into the study in line with existing literature. The formal and functional interactions between ceramic candlesticks and metal candlesticks are examined from a comparative perspective, exploring how these interactions contributed to the transformation of ceramic art. Furthermore, the technical and aesthetic relationships established through metalwork in ceramic production are evaluated, revealing the connections between these two disciplines. This research, conducted on examples selected from various geographical regions and different collections, aims to reveal the place of ceramic candlesticks from the Ottoman period in Islamic art in more depth and to fill the existing literature gap in this field. By examining the development of candlestick forms seen in the major centers of Ottoman-era ceramic production, such as İznik, Kütahya, and Çanakkale, the study aims to provide a new perspective for future research on the subject.
