Abstract

Dijital Kültürde Festivaller: Yapı ve İşlevleri ile Sanat Festivalleri Örneği

Culture, as a dynamic structure that binds communities together, is in a state of constant transformation in response to the demands of the times. Festivals, one of the most deeply rooted forms of entertainment and ritual in human history, have also been influenced by this dynamic structure. Festivals, which have persisted by evolving from their very inception to the present day, have now become an integral part of digital culture. This study examines the structural and functional evolution of festivals—traditionally held in person and in specific physical locations—particularly in light of digitalization and the pandemic. The technological capabilities of the 21st century have liberated festivals from being confined to local rituals, transforming them into “trans-local” forms—accessible globally—that transcend local boundaries through digital or physical networks, yet do not completely sever their connection to local identity, and into hybrid platforms. The study analyzes the adaptation processes of art festivals to the digital environment through examples such as the Istanbul Digital Art Festival (IDAF), Ars Electronica, and the International Workers’ Film Festival. As a result, it has been determined that while digitalization grants festivals global visibility and technical diversity, it also brings risks such as a decline in face-to-face interaction and a weakening of community consciousness.
