Abuse of Faith in Muzaffer İzgü’s İt Adası

This study aims to reveal how the people living in the village approached the clergy typology. Muzaffer İzgü is a responsible writer who knows how to show the failing aspects of life with his socialist-realist novels. In his work It Island, he wrote down these shortcomings by successfully using black humor. Ignorance, poverty, wrong sexual orientation of young people due to ignorance, and how false religious men deceive the public are painfully described in the novel. In our study, how the clergy gained the belief of the people and what methods they used while doing this were examined. The numbers, which the people ascribe to holiness, the names of the prophets, the stones believed to be brought from the sacred mountains became a tool for the mullahs to convince the villagers. Villagers who wanted to get rid of poverty, women without children applied to the Mullahs, whose miracles they believed, as a remedy. In our research, Muzaffer Izgü's novel İt Adası was used as the main source, and the issue of how false religious men deceived the villagers were discussed. In addition, the parallels of the perception of the clergy of the period in several works have been revealed. In addition to many novels, the clergy, who are reflected in Turkish cinema, are similar to the perception in the novel we examined.
