Notes on Deverbal Derivational Suffixes Used for Verb Formation in Dîvânü Lügâti’t-Türk

Dîvânü Lügâti’t-Türk is one of the most significant pieces of work regarding Turkish language. It represents the oldest preserved encyclopedic dictionary of Turkish language. Dîvânü Lügâti’t-Türk, prepared by Kâşgarlı Mahmud from 1072 to 1074, should not be characterized only as a dictionary. The book also presents some very important data regarding Turkic nations, grammatical rules of Turkish language and linguistic peculiarities of Turkic dialects. It was purely by chance that Ali Amiri, a book lover, found the only preserved original copy of Dîvânü Lügâti’t-Türk in Istanbul in 1914. The book aroused great interest in turkologists. The only preserved copy of the book was first translated from 1915 to 1917 with the support of Talat Paşa and under the mentorship of Kilisli Rıfat. The first edition of the translation by Besim Atalay to Turkish language was edited in four volumes from 1939 to 1943, while the second edition was published from 1985 to 1986. This paper analyzes deverbal derivational suffixes for verb formation in Dîvânü Lügâti’t-Türk.
