The Crusades are a very important issue in terms of world history. Many people participated in this movement, which began with the slogan of saving the Holy Land and created a field of struggle in the Turkish and Muslim geography for nearly two hundred years.. Many of the people who joined the expedition with what was promised to them lost their lives. Some were captured and enslaved. It can be said that the main purpose of this movement, which emerged with religious slogans, was to gain political and religious authority along with economic gains. Popes, Kings, Emperors, and Nobles worked with all their might to benefit from these expeditions. Only the First Crusade was completely successful. The Second and Third Crusades, which were organized later, did not bring any success for Christians. Especially Saladin Ayyubi's recapture of Jerusalem from the Crusaders on July 4, 1187, had a great impact in Europe, and preparations were immediately completed and the Third Crusade was organized. The failure of this expedition reactivated the Papacy in Europe and caused the preparations for the Fourth Crusade to begin. The political chaos in Europe, the throne struggles within Byzantium, the desire of the Venetians to benefit from the existing chaotic situation, the Pope's dream of establishing his own authority over all Christians and even the world, the effort to start the Fourth Crusade with a new army formed in the equation of economic, political and religious sovereignty became the sole purpose of Europe. Such a situation should of course be examined in detail. The preparations for the Fourth Crusade and the efforts of Pope Innocent III for this expedition constitute the subject of our article. In this context, the subject will be evaluated in detail.
