The aim of this study is to describe the book genre preferences, the weekly time allocated to reading, and the people or sources encouraging reading among 8th-grade middle school students according to socioeconomic status and gender. The study was conducted with 600 students attending schools in the Eyyübiye, Haliliye, and Karaköprü districts of Şanlıurfa province. The participants consisted of 300 female and 300 male students. Data were collected using a three-question open-ended interview form prepared by the researchers and analyzed through content analysis. The findings indicate that the story genre is the most preferred book genre across all socioeconomic status groups (low, medium, and high). Regarding the time allocated to reading, the 1–3 hour range stands out across all socioeconomic groups. In terms of people or sources encouraging reading, teachers were found to be the most prominent influence across all socioeconomic levels. The findings demonstrate that students' reading behaviors cannot be explained solely by socioeconomic status or gender; rather, factors such as teachers, family, the school environment, student interests, and access to books must be evaluated collectively. The results of the study are expected to contribute to practices aimed at developing a reading culture among students and to serve as a guide for teachers, families, and educational administrators.
