Humour performers, who stand out in society with their colourful personalities, retain many stories in their memory. They can reproduce a story and adapt it to humour. Humour performers are individuals with a strong ability to recount various folk literature products according to the course of conversation at a humour gathering. The stories told by humour performers may include many products of folk culture, such as fairy tales, legends, epics, and memorates. Among these stories, memorate tales appear with many different performances. Sometimes they serve as lullabies to help children fall asleep, while at other times they make children laugh and encourage them to behave. The memorats ‘keleftar’ and ‘elk’ are also narrated in Van and its surroundings. In some regions, they have become a means of instilling fear and have secured a place in people's memories.
This study will emphasise the memorate of ‘keleftar’ and ‘elk’ which are memorat characters appearing in the stories narrated by Sedat Yavaş, an important humorist in Van culture. The humorist Sedat Yavaş, who narrates the story in a humorous style, draws attention to the aspect of the ‘keleftar’ and ‘elk’ narrative, which he tells with the aim of making people in the region laugh, being a source of fear, emphasising that fear can be a means of entertainment and laughter. The study utilised the observation and interview techniques, which are qualitative research methods.
